The pipeline-first playbook

Build once.
Run continuously.
Keep moving forward.

The OCI philosophy is simple: give agents a business process worth running, the environment to run it in, and people who provide direction.

01

The pipeline is the unit of value.

A research result, draft email, or updated record matters when it advances the whole process. Design for the outcome, not an isolated demonstration of AI.

02

The business decides the software.

Rebuild the process where a fresh design helps. Use existing tools where they fit. The goal is a coherent system, not rebuilding for its own sake.

03

Development is the first capability.

Before scaling operational agents, create the team that can develop, test, and improve their environment.

04

Agents execute. Management directs.

Routine work should not require someone to initiate every step. People set goals, review performance, handle exceptions, and initiate new work.

05

Progress compounds pipeline by pipeline.

Let the operating agents keep the first pipeline running. Use the development team to build the next, carrying forward useful context and components.

The Autonomous Business by Philippe Theunissen — book cover

The bigger idea

The Autonomous
Business.

Philippe Theunissen’s book explores the possibilities of an agentic business. OCI turns that direction into practical work: one custom-fit pipeline, one operating team, and one measurable outcome at a time.

Useful answers

From the idea
to the practicalities.

What do you mean by a fully automated pipeline?

The routine work moves from its initial trigger to a checked outcome without someone manually passing every step along. Agents coordinate the stages, use the software, and handle defined recovery paths. Management still sets direction, owns decisions, and receives exceptions outside the agreed operating rules.

Do we have to replace all our software?

No. We keep the tools you are happy with and connect them into the pipeline. Custom development is for the gaps, unnecessary complexity, or subscriptions that no longer justify their cost—not a requirement to rebuild everything.

Why is the development team the first AI team?

It creates the environment the other agents need: the process-specific software, dashboards, integrations, checks, and deployment setup. It then stays available to improve running pipelines and build the next ones.

Will this reduce our SaaS spending?

It can, where custom-fit software replaces overlapping or underused subscriptions. We compare the full cost, including development, hosting, AI usage, integrations, maintenance, and human oversight. A lower subscription bill alone is not proof of a better business case.

What is a sensible first pipeline?

A recurring, valuable process with accessible data, a clear owner, and an observable outcome. B2B lead-to-conversation, client onboarding, invoice reconciliation, and support resolution are useful starting points. We choose based on your business, not a fixed template.

Who remains accountable?

Your organisation does. The operating model names a process owner and sets authority, spend limits, escalation rules, logs, and a pause mechanism. Autonomy is earned through end-to-end testing and measured operation.

Your process. An agent team to run it. More room to lead.
